According to Harvard Business Review, only 20% of leaders are purpose-driven. Yet, purpose-driven leadership can unlock a significant competitive advantage for leaders and organizations, enhancing performance in several key areas:
- Harnessing Untapped Motivation and Engagement: Purpose-driven leaders inspire their teams by connecting daily tasks to a larger mission, increasing motivation and engagement.
- Accelerating Leadership Development: Aligning with a clear purpose fosters both skill development and a growth mindset, propelling leaders forward.
- Efficiency in Action: Purpose-driven leaders focus on what truly matters, achieving more by doing less.
- Attracting and Retaining Talent: Organizations with a clear purpose become magnets for top talent, reducing turnover and increasing employee loyalty.
- Creating High Value for Stakeholders: Purpose-driven leaders prioritize sustainable success, benefiting all stakeholders.
- Fueling Innovation: A clear purpose encourages continuous innovation, creating a cycle of inspiration, implementation, and results.
#1 Unleashing a deep sense of motivation and a healthy fighting spirit
Aligning with your vocation unleashes a profound sense of motivation, willpower, and strength. I strongly believe that everyone has a unique vocation, and aligning with it is a superpower. Leaders feel a deep sense of motivation to lead stakeholders, their c-level team and own teams. This unique task or challenge we are meant to solve evolves as we grow, sometimes requiring significant realignment.
For example, a Chief Marketing Officer at a tech company may feel their purpose shifting towards leading an investment fund for deep tech companies or working for an NGO focused on SDG goals. Conversely, a smaller, internal alignment might involve a Chief Technology Officer who sees their purpose in integrating the latest Artificial Intelligence to give their company a competitive edge.
I explain it perhaps in simple terms, yet for real purpose-driven we have to access and reflect on deeper layers of ourselves: our core drive, our core strengths and also where we not being true to the role(s) that come naturally to use and where we have to develop ourselves. This is why often people and leaders realize things during vacation, when in rest we are in touch and connect with ourselves on another level.
To be continued.
